Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position

The Director of Risk Management oversees the daily operations of the risk management department by performing administrative and operational duties that focus on highquality results. Assesses and identifies current and potential risks affecting patient safety and fiscal operation. Ensures delivery of patientcentered, costeffective quality services across the continuum of care, optimal utilization of resources and compliance with applicable local, state, federal rules, regulations and security standards.

  • Leads daytoday operation of the department and risk management prevention and control program, following guidelines and regulatory requirements and monitors overall effectiveness of the program and departmental activities.
  • Partners with senior leadership and other key stakeholders to define the strategic direction and operational plan for advancing risk management programs, ensuring alignment with the Systems mission, values, and business goals.
  • Develops and implements quality assurance program and related services, and establishes program and service goals and priorities. Identifies problems and recommends and/or implements standard, costeffective measures for service improvement.
  • Concurrently reviews existing policies and standard operating procedures to identify gaps or discrepancies, implements revisions, and evaluates patient and public safety policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Oversees various committees, assessing and predicting changes in risk. Conducts research and studies to identify and analyze trends in risk and may participate in special risk studies.
  • Compiles, reviews and interprets risk data, and presents key findings to various committees and other stakeholders, creating strategies and recommendations for interventions and appropriate control measures.
  • Serves as a principal advisor and key resource to senior leadership and other parties, acting as liaison between appropriate agencies on all matters pertaining to patient and public safety, risk assessment, and other factors relating to security excellence.
  • Investigates accidents and incidents involving safety matters and promptly reports to appropriate local, state and federal public health and regulatory agencies. Analyzes and documents accidents and incidents, utilizing appropriate tools and other applicable methods of analysis, to identify contributing factors and other safety concerns.
  • Partners with senior leadership to develop and maintain alert monitoring and reporting procedures, creating strategies and action plans to address potential risks, reduce the likelihood of these risks, and lessen impact if they occur.
  • Prepares and/or actively participates in development of fiscal year expense, revenue and operating budgets. Ensures operations run within budgetary guidelines, reviews budget requests for risk management services and monitors all related expenses and purchases.
  • Collaborates with appropriate parties to identify organizational needs; monitors staff and resource utilization and makes adjustments required to support initiatives and staff with appropriate resources.
  • Assists in development of training programs and provides orientation, training, and guidance to staff. Routinely assesses staff learning needs, identifying gaps and evaluating the quality and effectiveness of the programs. Implements necessary changes to maximize productivity, effectiveness and efficiency of staff.
  • Provides education and information on patient and public safety protocols and prevention techniques to clinical and nonclinical staff, community members, patients and caregivers.
  • Ensures ongoing compliance and maintenance of NYC Health + Hospitals policies and procedures with national standards and other applicable external regulatory requirements, guidelines and accreditation authorities, as well as safety and quality management standards. Maintains an Environment of Care under accreditation standards by ensuring ongoing maintenance of all required departmental regulatory accreditations.
  • Participates in internal/external quality assurance/performance improvement (QA/PI) activities, programs, and training as required.
  • Performs other related duties, as directed.

Qualification Requirements

  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Risk Management, Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related health care specialization, and three (3) years of experience in risk management, control, and prevention, leading and implementing quality and risk management programs, managing and analyzing risk data, and performing other related functions in a hospital or health care setting, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in the same fields, and four (4) years of risk management experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or
  • Bachelors degree in the disciplines described above; and two (2) years of clinical, patient care or equivalent experience in a hospital or health care setting, plus two (2) years of related experience, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or
  • A satisfactory equivalent of education, training, and/or experience. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or current license and registration to practice as a Professional Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or other similar clinical designation, may be substituted for one (1) year of experience, however all incumbents must have at least a bachelors degree and one (1) year of responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory experience.
